The Dalai Lama was born on 6. July 1935 as son of a farmer family in northeastern Tibet and named Lhamo Dhondup. At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is believed to be a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet.

Since his recognition the Dalai Lama experienced bad times, such as his escape to India as a refugee, good times, like receiving the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1989. He has written many books and committed his life to the promotion of human values and religious harmony. In March 2011 the Dalai Lama announced to retire from his political role as head of the Tibetan community, to give them the opportunity to elect a leader.
