World’s Longest Trek Officially Opens

The longest trek in the world, the Great Himalaya Trail in Nepal, has officially been opened. In July, the first two people ever completed the trek, which is 1,700km long and takes 157 days to complete.

The trek can be broken down into smaller sections, to suit all fitness levels, and offers a range of new routes for trekkers in the Himalaya. A code of conduct for trekkers has been developed, and it is hoped those trekking along the Great Himalaya Trail will adopt it and give back to their host communities.

    Sounds fantastic, and almost certainly the most beautiful trek in the world. However, I have doubts with regard to it being the world’s longest: the Florida Trail (2300km), Buckeye Trail (2324km), Appalachian Trail (3500km), East Coast Greenway (4800km), Continental Divide Trail (5000km), Eastern Continental Trail (8700km) and several others in the USA alone are considerably longer. The American Discovery Trail, at 10,900km, is more than ten times longer.

      Thank you for putting that right, it looks like we overlooked something there! The Great Himalayan Trail is not the longest trek in the world, certainly not the Nepal section of it. It’s total length from Pakistan to Tibet is around 4,500km, making it the longest and highest Alpine trek.
