Itinerary
Day 01
Kathmandu | Lhasa [3650m]
Transfer to the airport in time to catch your flight to Lhasa, one of the most spectacular flights over the highest mountain range on earth with excellent views of the peaks, including Mount Everest.
Upon arrival at Gonggar airport you will be met by our representative. After immigration formalities, you will be driven to Lhasa. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the old city. After checking in at your hotel, you are advised to take rest to acclimatize to the altitude
Day 02 – B
Lhasa
Today you will visit the spectacular Potala Palace. It is the most striking landmark in Lhasa and an architectural wonder. You will remember the sight of this fort-like palace for the rest of your life. The palace contains the private quarters of the Dalai Lama and numerous staterooms.
As you are guided through the ancient chambers of the palace, you get to see Tibetan art at its best. The Potala Palace has a vast array of intricate Tibetan murals and beautiful statues. You will also get to view the tombs of eight Dalai Lamas.
Later in the day you will visit the beautifully landscaped Drepung Monastery where you can observe nuns and monks chanting and performing religious discourses. The monastery once was one of the largest in the world with 10,000 monks. After the day’s tour is over, you are escorted back to your hotel for a well- earned rest.
Day 3 -B
Lhasa | Gyantse
Enjoy a full day picturesque drive crossing over Karola and Kambala. You will have stunning views of the colourful Yamdrok Lake and the Tibetan lifeline river Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo). You will stop briefly to get the chance to savour thes dramatic scenery.
On turning westwards, you come across another pass, Karo La at 5045m. If you look at the road, you can see huge glaciers tumbling down. After driving 261 km, beautifully landscaped Tibetan villages become visible as you enter the town of Gyantse.
Day 04 – B
Gyantse | Shigatse [3900m]
In the morning visit the famous Kumbum Stupa: 35m high with a crown-like golden dome it is truly awe-inspiring.
Afterwards have a look at Phalkor Monastery with its fine paintings and statues. The Phalkhor holds a special meaning for Buddhism in Tibet because its unity of Gelugpa, Sakyapa & Bhuton sects.
Later drive to Shigatse, where you will visit the Panchen Lama’s Tashilumpu Monastery. It is one of the few monasteries to have survived the Cultural Revolution. It is big enough to be a walled town in its own and busy, cobbled lanes twist around the old buildings.
Tashilumpu is seat to the Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual leader of Tibet. It was founded by Gedun Drup, who was later recognized as the 1st Dalai Lama. The main statue of this monastery is a Maitreya Buddha made of 275 kg gold, measuring 26m in height. Stay overnight in Shigatse.
Day 05 – B
Shigatse | Shegar [4050m]
Today you will traverse along the Friendship Highway amidst picturesque landscape driving past the small town of Lhatse and cross Gyamtso La pass at 5220m. As the route opens into plains, many monasteries and camps of nomadic herders become visible en route to Shegar.
Day 06 – B L D
Shegar | Kharta [4190m]
Today your adventure really starts to take shape, as we go from the arid glassy plains of the Tibetan plateau to the green Kharta Valley. It has the highest known forests in the world and it is very fertile land. Unlike the rest of Tibet, the rains from Nepal’s monsoon reach this valley and have given it the lushness of Nepal’s foothills. Stay overnight in a camp
Day 07 – B L D
Kharta | Yuerba [4350m, 6 hrs]
Today your trek will start. You will head westward along the crystal clear Kharta Chu River. The beautiful valley is home to many small villages and offers some good campsites. Today your walk will end at Yuerba, which sits on a small rise above the river. Camp
Day 08 – B L D
Yuerba | Lhatse [4590m, 7 hrs]
Your trek will continue further heading west along the Kharka valley until entering the Karma Valley, which eventually leads to the Kangshung, face of Mt. Everest. You will proceed through the large village of Lhundrubing to a campsite. Camp
Day 09 – B L D
Lhatse | Langma La [4700m, 6 hrs]
Today will be a difficult trekking day, as you head over the three-tiered Langma La. You will cross the first tier in 1.5 hours with an altitude gain of 300m, then walk along a broad, level, rocky shelf along a 1km long glacial lake.
You will climb 170m to another giant shelf then a final 150m to the top of the Langma La for truly magnificent views of the Himalayas. To the southwest rises massive Makalu (8463m), with its four sharp jagged peaks. Mt. Everest is to the right of Makalu. Spread out to the west like an amphitheatre of jagged snow peaks and glaciers, three great glaciers converge in the deep, green valley below.
The pass will descend southward through grassy uplands and a couple of small lakes, until reaching a huge boulder with a cave beneath it. Camp
Day 10 – B L D
Langma La | Drogpa [4650m, 7 hrs]
Today you will walk down the valley, stopping near the edge of a bluff overlooking three valleys: the Langma La, Karma, and the Chog La to the east. Across the Karma Valley are the astounding cliffs of Chomo Lonzo. You will walk through grassy meadows and rhododendron scrubs along the way to our camping site. Camp
Day 11 – B L D
Drogpa | Pethang Ringmo [4800m, 7 hrs]
Heading west up the Karma Valley by following the river, you reach glacial moraines and landslides that make the going difficult. Once around a bend in the trail, you will finally get to view Everest properly for the first time. It looms large at the head of the valley beyond the Kangshung Glacier.
After 3 hours of hopping across boulders and over moraines, you will reach the Kangshung Face base camp. This large, grassy area with stunning views of Mt. Everest and Lhotse is known as Pethang Ringmo. Camp
Day 12 – B L D
Pethang Ringmo [4800m, 6 hrs]
You will spend the day in the area to take advantage of the many possible hikes Pethang Ringmo has to offer. It is possible to walk farther along the glacier to the west by climbing up a 5,958m ridge (3 hours). From here, Mt. Everest is only 5 km away, and to the southeast you can see a striking amphitheatre of peaks dominated by Lhotse. Camp at Kangshung Face Base Camp again.
Day 13 – B L D
Pethang Ringmo | Ridge Top [4250m, 5 hrs]
Today you will climb up to the Ridge Top. Camp
Day 14 – B L D
Ridge Top | Pethang Ringmo [4800 m, 6 hrs]
Descend again to Pethang Ringmo. Camp
Day 15 – B L D
Pethang Ringmo | Sharlung [4600m, 8 hrs]
Trek back to a point below the Tangshum cave. Then you will walk along to a ridge that overlooks the river valley which extends to the northeast and the Chok La. Continue to the end of the ridge to its end and descend for a short distance to another cave called Sharlung. Camp
Day 16 – B L D
Sharlung | Sharo [4500m, 7 hrs]
From Sharlung, we turn north and cross two ridges to reach a wooded valley. The abundant moisture of Karma valley derives from Makalu. Later you will ascend towards the Shao La. Makalu’s eastern glacier appears and all around the path are sheer, black cliffs. At the foot of the pass you will find Sharo cave. Camp
Day 17 – B L D
Sharo | Yuerba [4350m, 7 hrs]
From the cave to the Shao La pass (5,030m) you will walk for an easy 2-hour ascent. Descend northward to an open area next to a lake. The trail continues north to the Kharta valley at Yarbu. You will keep to the right bank of the Kharta River to get back to Yuerba. Camp
Day 18 – B L D
Yuerba | Kharta [4190m, 6 hrs]
For the last time today savour the lush green of Kharta valley. Trek back to Kharta, where your trek ends. Visit a farm house and mingle with the local people to get to know more about their lifestyle. Camp
Day 19 – B L D
Kharta | Phadruchi [4000m, 6 hrs]
Today your journey will continue driving towards the North Face of Everest. This is the most travelled area to see Mt. Everest from within Tibet. Camp
Day 20 – B L D
Phadruchi | Everest Base Camp [5150m]
Today you will drive to Everest Base Camp.
Away from Shegar, you will drive to the south crossing Pang La pass at 5150m. Along the drive you can bask in the splendor of majestic views of snow-capped peaks from Makalu to Shishapangma.
After driving for 68 km, you eventually reach Rongbuk at 5000m. You can then view spectacular sight of Mount Everest. You have the opportunity to explore Everest Base Camp. The base camp itself is dry and barren, but the views of Everest more than compensates for it. It truly is an awe-inspiring place with the sheer north face of the highest mountain in the world towering above you. Camp
Day 21 – B L D
Everest Base Camp
Today you will have a rest day at the Base Camp for local exploration. An optional day hike will be led just on top of the nearby hills for more glamorous views, or a walk towards the Rongbuk glacier following the expedition route for some time. Or you may just want to sit back and enjoy the scenery, maybe catching up on your journals. Camp
Day 22 – B
Everest Base Camp | Nyalam [3750m]
You will drive past Tingri, crossing Lalung La pass at 5124m and Shug La pass at 5200m. Savoring the enchanting views of the surrounding peaks of Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, Menlungtse and Gauri Shankar, you descend from the arid Tibetan Plateau to Nyalam.
Day 23 – B
Nyalam | Kathmandu [1400m]
Drive to Kathmandu. From Nyalam, you drive down to the border town of Zhangmu. From Zhangmu, it’s a short drive to the Friendship Bridge which spans the Bhote Kosi River and marks the Chinese – Nepalese border where you part with your Tibetan guide and driver and walk to Nepalese Immigration Control in Kodari where you will be met by your Nepalese staff. After completing the re-entry formalities, you continue the drive to Kathmandu, which, depending on road and weather conditions, should take about 5-6 hours.
