Gurkha Selection
Every year thousands of young Nepali men set all their hopes and efforts into being selected to join the famous Brigade of Gurkhas. Himalayan Footsteps gives you the unique chance to follow one of them on his way through the selection process – share with him excitement, emotions and joy and dive deeper into the culture of Nepal than any other traveller.
Gurkha soldiers have been in the British Army for almost 200 years and fighting its battle in every corner of the world. They still carry their traditional weapons – Gurkha knives called Khukuri – into battle and are famed for their outstanding bravery. The selection process to join these ranks is known to be one of the toughest in the world, and there are only around 200 places for nearly 30,000 applicants each year.
In the villages in the hills of Nepal each year thousands of young men between 17 and 21 prepare for the tough selection process to join the Gurkha regiment. Regional examinations find the best of them, to invite them to Pokhara, where the final selection takes place. We give you the unique chance to follow a young hopeful on his way.
You can choose to visit the regional selection. You will live in the village, experience village life and see how the men prepare for the selection, before attending the selection examinations. Alternatively you can visit the final selection in Pokhara and see the best of them compete for one of the few spaces in the Brigade of Gurkhas.
