Lake Namtso Holidays
Lake Namtso lies in the mountains of Central Tibet at an altitude of more than 4,000 metres. Its crystal clear waters are revered by Tibetan Buddhists, and every year many pilgrims trek to its shores.
The name of Lake Namtso means “heavenly mother lake” in Tibetan. It is a high mountain freshwater lake and freezes over up to 7 months per year. Nestled in the most beautiful landscapes it is surrounded by high mountains. On a clear day, the lake is as calm and clear as a mirror with its turquoise waters. On other days, red clouds form in the sky and reflect in the lake’s surface.
Namtso lake is a holy place for Tibetan Buddhists, it takes a special position in the reincarnation system.
Whenever a successor for the Dalai Lama or Panchen Lama is expected those who are looking for them go to Lake Namtso in the hope of seeing an image of their reincarnation in the lake.
From April to June many pilgrims frequent the lake and sights around it. Some hope to catch a glimpse of their future life from a reflection in the lake.
