Uttar Pradesh is home to some of India’s most popular destinations: Agra, with its marvellous Taj Mahal, and the holy city of Varanasi. The myth-laden Ganges flows through Uttar Pradesh, providing a spiritual backbone for Hinduism, the state’s main religion.

With nearly 200 million inhabitants Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state, and even on its own would be the world’s fifth most populous country. It covers the fertile plains of the upper Ganges region and borders Nepal.

Uttar Pradesh is considered the birthplace of Hinduism and has many important places of pilgrimage for Hindus, but also for Buddhists. The magnificent built heritage of the Mughal culture can be seen in many places in Uttar Pradesh.

The Holi festival celebrations in Mathura are particularly famous, many people try to arrange their holidays in Uttar Pradesh at that time, so they can take part in the festivities. Every 12 years also the Kumbh Mela is held in Uttar Pradesh, it is the world”s largest gathering with more than 10 million people participating.
